What
Folly/Function is an annual juried competition engaging architects to design and build a project for public presentation at Socrates Sculpture Park. The 2018 competition asked entrants to propose movable outdoor seating to be used in Socrates Sculpture Park.
Scale Rule were delighted to be one of seven-commended entries, and look forward to seeing the winning entry RRRolling Stones this summer! Our proposal focused on the inevitable arrival of the mutants of Hell Gate on the shores of Socrates Sculpture Park:
The East River has been officially dead for a century – choked on industrial pollution. But the city continues to de-industrialise, and the river has started recovering. In 2018 the mutants of Hell Gate will arrive: 16 worms, unknown mutants created by pollution in the river, will slither on to Socrates Sculpture Park from Hallet Cove attempting to escape the re-oxygenating water in which they cannot survive.
Each worm will be a flexible 10’ long and 2’ wide tube which can be moved, rearranged and reshaped by people in the park into a long low bench, a single raised seats, or a reclining double. A worm is a heavy-duty external grade truck tarpaulin shell. The tarpaulin is lasercut, filled with flexible foam pieces, and sealed. Buckles are sewn to the ends to allow the worms to be attached to each other, and sewn to the bottom to allow them to be reshaped.
