What
As part of the Goldsmith’s Centre celebration of five years of training young people in design craft in Clerkenwell and this year’s CDW programme at the Goldsmiths’ Centre we also had the opportunity to design the exhibition for the Serendipity Studio-the result of a collaboration with five design companies who met just 5 months ago. The group comprised a materials library, a bespoke bike designer and former jeweller, an engine turner and a 3D printing studio and Scale Rule.
Celebrating five years of training of young people in design craft in Clerkenwell, Scale Rule team up with custom bicycle builders, 3D printers, casual construction enablers, revolutionary material libraries to synthesize the design and construction process in a month long architectural installation.
For the build on a Saturday morning we were joined by keen young students from The Creative Dimension who are interested in craft and 3d work. As well as helping us assemble the bespoke rubber bung contraptions (developed to attach the hub connectors to hollow metal tubes) and building the prismatic structures, they were also treated to a tour of Grimshaw architects offices and a Q&A on the built environment industries.
The exhibition was designed to show the collective connectivity of this eclectic group of makers, communicating the shared input which converged and culminated in the Serendipity installation. We achieved this by physically linking the boards for each company together, creating a visual network which guided the eye seamlessly from each makers board to the next. The aesthetics- were inspired by the installation, with the yellow rope mirroring the yellow tubing and the industrial features, such as the eyebolts, reflecting the disciplines that made up the five companies. For Scale Rule’s part of this exhibition we displayed the student’s work for the Next Generation Design Pavilion being built in St James Church Garden, along with miniature hubs kits to recreate components of the installation
