Well done and thanks to all of those involved this weekend for the generation pop-up workshops. The culmination of the weekend saw the judges pick ‘A tree come true’ as the winning design so look out for a whole load of tubes and pipes coming to exchange square this September. Maybe even Mario and Luigi will show up…
Blogging fame!
Projects, Uncategorized1/3 of the Next Generation Design London team have been talking to the IStructE about why they do what they do. Well done them! All can be read here
Conflicts of an Urban Age
Education, Next Generation DesignWe’re delighted to be showcasing Next Generation Design as part of an upcoming LSE Cities exhibition, at 8 Fitroy St.
This technically means that its an ‘inspirational solution, developed and implemented by individuals, local communities or organisations at grassroots level, that addresses challenges posed by rapid urban growth in London’. Phew.
More info available on the LSE Cities site here
Testing To The Tooth
EducationAl Dente Engineering happened, with 50+ budding mini material scientists helping test our pasta sections in bending and compression before adding to our pasta cityscape!
Buildings were built, pasta was tested. Here are some snaps…
…and here are some very preliminary tantalising results, with no explanation! What do they mean? Watch this space for a proper evaluation soon.
COMETH THE HOUR; COMETH THE PAVILION
Education, Next Generation Design, ProjectsTomorrow morning Next Generation Design London 2018 opens with Clerkenwell Design Week! It’s a bit redder than previous years. And also more plant-y. We think you’ll like it!
Congratulations to the excellent London Scale Rule team who have pulled this together from the excellent student concept design with the inspiring and nimble-fingered help of a team of excellent volunteers from the Scale Ruler network, AKT II, Grimshaw and beyond!
(Extra special bonus points to The Edible Bus Stop for bringing the greenery in a last minute foliage dash)
Engineering with bite
Education, Upside Down BuildingsIt’s now only 20 sleeps until Open House Families, where Scale Rule will be running some structural tests on different pasta shapes at Al Dente Engineering.
After a 3 year hiatus since Upside Down Buildings, we’re looking forward to exploring fundamental structural engineering principles through practical tests and messy edible small-scale construction.

Construction’s a Go-Go
Next Generation Design, Projects
Construction for this years next generation design pavilion has begun in earnest! If you’re in the Clerkenwell area over the weekend be sure to drop by and say hello. The pavilion will be up for the whole of Clerkenwell Design Week and will remain in place for the enjoyment of the community for the summer. There’s more information on the Scale Rule website here and on the CDW website here.
A “Montrosity”!?!
Competitions
So close yet so far. Sad news that our damn near genius entry to the Architectural Leagures Socrates Sculpture Park bench competition fell at the final hurdle (unlike the models in the poster, who fell at the first). We thought we’d be in with a pretty good shout with our idea for seating in the form of giant reshapable tarpaulin bags shaped like worms. But as they say, one person’s montrosity is another’s finest work (or something like that!). A full write up of all the commended entries can be found on the Architectural Leagues website and more information about the proposal on our website here.
A pavilion will be born
Education, Next Generation Design, ProjectsIn two weeks work will be well underway for this year’s Next Generation Design Pavilion in London! Here’s a quick sneak peak of what you might expect below.
Very exciting…
